So now - my experience with Earth's Berries Soap Nuts in one word:

FANTASTIC!

I purchased a large bag (1kg) from TheShoppingChannel when I saw Karen's intriguing presentation on TV. That 1kg bag will do approximately 300-400 loads of laundry. With a purchase price of $30 CDN - that equals maximum $0.10 per load!!! The average laundry detergent runs around $0.30 per load - so it's pretty obvious which is better on the wallet.

First I started using it for laundry. Following the directions on the bag (which can also be found here on their website), I used it as my only laundry soap for several weeks - and I have had nothing but great results! Clothes come out clean with no odor or scent from the soap - even my husband's nasty work pants that he has slugged through the mud - completely clean! Hot water, cold water, small loads, large VERY dirty loads - didn't matter what the combination - it all turned out clean and fresh!

I was very impressed, and quite pleased with myself for finding such an effective natural product :)

So I moved on to see what else Earth's Berries Soap Nuts could do for me...and so began the creating of soap nut liquid. I followed Karen's video instructions at the Earth's Berries Soap Nuts website to create a rather large quantity of soap nut liquid - very easy to do!

So my first batch all jarred and ready to be put to the test!

I then used it in a spray bottle as an all-purpose cleaner - on counters, table tops, cabinets, sinks...great easy cleaning!

I then used it to spot treat a few dirty areas on some drapery - worked FANTASTIC! Stains were completely gone with no discoloration or residue on the drapes. It totally saved me from taking each panel down and throwing them in the wash. Saved me time and energy!

Now my routine has been to create Earth's Berries Soap Nuts liquid and freeze it in ice cube trays. Since my freezer is in my laundry room, it's easy access to "ready to use" cleaner. I alternate between using the soap nuts in the muslin laundry bag or using a cube or two of the frozen liquid for each laundry load. Both work just as well.

I plan to use Earth's Berries Soap Nuts for all my child's laundering needs...including cloth diapers!!! I have full confidence it won't let me down.

Baby Boy's Finished Quilt!

Well here it is! Finished! All washed and crinkly!

It was actually my husband who chose the Arcadia collection. I had a few different collections set out for him, and he chose this one...and I must say I'm quite pleased. I just used a simple half-square triangle to create the diamond pattern. Simple and easy to whip up!

I then quilted straight lines within the white borders to give it a little more dimension.

I backed it with some flannel that is white with dots of each of the colours in the quilt - matched perfectly (I should have taken a picture).

Now all I need is the little one to wrap him up in it :)

3 weeks and counting till he's due to arrive!!!

It's been decided!!! We plan to cloth diaper our babe!!!

That's right: I AM GOING TO USE CLOTH DIAPERS!
(I'm shouting it in announcement so that I can't go back on our decision and we'll definitely have to follow through...lol)

It was actually DH suggestion several weeks ago. At first I thought he was crazy, but then I began researching, and I must say - they are just too CUTE!

That's what first caught my eye - all the lovely colours and patterns - and sweet little bottoms tucked away in such pretty cloth!

Of course, there are many more reasons to cloth diaper:
1. Economical - the cost savings can be very significant when using cloth vs disposables - disposables can cost upwards of $2800 for a baby's life in diapers - cloth can cost anywhere from $200-$1300 per child. As you can see there's a vast difference!

2. Safer for Baby - disposables can contain dangerous and harsh chemicals - stuff that you wouldn't want next to baby's skin. Cloth diapers come in a variety of materials - many containing all organic and natural fibers.

3. Environmental - obviously reusable cloth diapers don't end up in the landfill - not like the 49 million of disposables that land there EVERY day!

4. More reliable - disposables have a bad habit of allowing blow outs - cloth diapers are made and designed to better prevent such accidents. Now I haven't had the joy of experiencing such an event, but I know I want the best secure diaper there is to prevent them!

5. And many many more advantages! Read up on them here, here, or just do a Google search - there is loads of materials out there to help you make your decision to switch to cloth!

It's been a long, long time...

Well it's been a LONG time since I've posted, or even thought about my blog. This past summer has been a whirlwind with more big exciting adventures on the way.

Biggest news of all: I'M PREGNANT!

Finally, after a year of trying (and I'm talking trying REAL hard) we conceived our first babe! Me and DH couldn't be more thrilled. So of course comes an overwhelming flood of emotions, and abruptly life changes directions. All of a sudden I'm not thinking about the newest fabric collection I can't bear to live without - I'm thinking about being a new mom! And all the terrifying thoughts that come with it! I'm sure many of you experienced mothers can more than relate to that initial shock and realization that life is never gonna be quite the same.

So for the first few months - life was a little rough...constant nausea and fatigue that pretty much drained my will to do anything exciting. But now things are picking up - I'm feeling better, have more energy, and am ready to get my life (and home) ready for this new little bundle. Hopefully more crafty items will be in the works, but I will admit, my minds on other projects - nothing like learning and planning for the arrival of a special little someone.

Ravelry Obsession

So it's been a while since I've picked up a set of knitting needles or a crochet hook for that matter...but stumbling upon Ravelry put an end to that!
I LOVE THIS SITE!

I spent all day yesterday organizing my stash and current projects (which haven't been touched for probably over a year!!!).

(Isn't my cashmere lovely??? A pressie from my sister!)

(I forgot I had this lovely softie!!!)

It felt so good to get everything together. Since I'm trying to destash this year (on everything...fabric, yarn, whatever), what a great way to see everything you have in one spot. As well, I can look at what others have done with that particular yarn and find inspirational projects. It will make it much easier to use up what I have...(hopefully...or I could fall in love with a multitude of yarns and patterns and justify purchasing pretty things). If you are a knitter or hooker...I highly recommend you join this site. You can even organize your needles/hooks, projects, stash, books, patterns...lots of stuff!!!!!

For instance...I completly forgot about my Brea Bag...and it's so close to being finished! Now to figure out where I'm at in the pattern....

And I found a simple quick pattern for a scrubbie! Made with 100% cotton, a great addition to any kitchen!!!

I know I'm going to have lots of fun with this site...and it's gotten me back into knitting!!!!

Some overdue updates

First off: LOOK AT THIS!!!!!!!!!

I received this beauty from Amy of Badskirt!!! Isn't it stunning! She used these Japanese prints and totally ran with what I love: birds and trees! I'm pleased as punch...I truly am! This was all apart of The Pillow Talk Swap - the best swap I have been in yet! Heather and Kerrie are superb organizers and I'm thrilled to be know and be involved with such a talented group. Next up will be the Urban Home Goods Swap - all partnered up...but still in the process of planning...

Update of Bee Blocks: This lovely is for Viv for March. I was a little tardy in getting it done because I have to admit, I was a little nervous to do this design. But overall it turned out awesome! I don't know if I would make a whole quilt out of these, because they are time consuming. You can find the tutorial here.

Just wanted to add a picture of my "Bubby"! He just had his first hair cut...doesn't he look handsome! It turns One Year this week...my baby's getting so big!

Distractions & Another Swap Opportunity

Well it's been a few weeks since I've entered my sewing room....too many distractions....

One being this energetic fellow:

We (me and hubby) have fortunately had some days off together, and were able to go on a few hikes with the enthusiastic pup.

See the black dot in the center of his tongue?? I'm assuming it's a birth mark of some sort....

He was leading us on the snowshoe trail.

Other distractions: Getting my wisdom teeth pulled! I know I'm a little old for it...but that's cause I just kept putting it off...
I'm all puffed up like a chipmunk and am not able to open my jaw very much...

But as I'm whining about my teeth, my cousin had his little boy! A big 8lb 13oz bouncing baby! And we all know what that means:
GET THAT BABY QUILT FINISHED ASAP!

New addiction perhaps?

Well, I'm beginning to love embroidery!!! Just another craft that I'm sure I will overindulge in.
Here's my progress so far on the bird pattern found here:

I've been using these two books as references for the stitches: Doodle Stitching, and Sublime Stitching. Both are very well informed and have pretty designs -Sublime Stitching has iron transfer patterns, so when you're ready to thread your needle, all you do is press and you're set to go. Doodle stitching has more intricate, involved patterns, that tell you which stitch to use where - but you do have to photocopy to the suggested size, so it requires a trip to the copy shop.

I still have quite a to-do list with the pillow swap approaching, and other bee blocks, but unfortunately my life to-do list is overpowering my urge to quilt. So off to the mechanic I go, to try and resusitate my poor old Golf - I think the time is approaching to put it to rest - but don't tell it I said that....

Another attempt at embroidery!

I used to be terrified of embroidery - so initimated by those lovely, intricate designs. Well it's time to put the needle to the cloth and give it a go. I have completed two other projects using embroidery for quilt labels, but nothing too advanced. Lets see how complex I can get with this design...fingers crossed it works out well!

More growing happening on the string block quilt - thanks to all the lovely ladies in my Live Piecefully group for contributing these vibrant blocks!. I'm trialing different patterns...

And more growth happening with my aerogarden. Unfortunately my basil never sprouted, but the thyme and oregano are growing like crazy! Almost time for harvesting! YUM!

Mail Goodness!!!

I LOVE MAIL!!!! Like I really do! And what a way to cheer me up, than to received these beautiful pieces!

Daria in BC sent me these lovely potholders for our Potholder Pass swap. How cute eh? (from a Canadian to a Canadian..hehe)

I think spring when I see this one...totally something to look forward to after this long snowy winter. Did I also mention I love birds...how fitting!

And a lovely Dresden plate. I haven't tried one of these yet, but it's on my to do list!

Potholder Pass swap project: quilted...check! Awesome!

Potholder Pass swap project: Binding and complete....check! Sweet!

Saying goodbye to my Jackson...not so sweet! Our poor little "fatty" wasn't so fat anymore. Losing almost a third of this body weight, and constantly struggling with his digestive system, me and hubby decided to not let him suffer anymore. He joined our little family almost 10 years ago, as our first pet together, in our very first apartment. He was with us through many ups and downs, always as snuggly as ever, even up until the end. We're going to miss him dearly.

Some progress on my Potholder Pass Swap - two fronts complete!!!

I haven't done alot of paper piecing and was thrilled to realize, it's really not that hard (for some reason though, I feel like I should bite my tongue and keep my mouth shut...I'm a little superstitous that way). You can find the pattern for this string/spiderweb block here. So now to quilt and bind them. I think I will follow this tutorial here...

On a second note, my choices for the pinwheel sampler quilt-a-long: Arcadia!

I have over 30 FQ's to choose from!!! This collection has been sitting in my stash for well over 6 months...so it's time...oh yes, it's time!

I'm still loving this pillow!!!

Just wanted to shout out to Kristen at ThreeDancingMagPies - she made me this beautiful pillow for our Pillow Talk Swap (you have to go check out our group's flickr page - you will soooo be inspired!). It's too darn nice...so I rearranged some furniture so that it had it's own resting spot.

And our new pooch Levi (isn't he pretty!!!) loves the new furniture arrangement too.

More appreciation goes to my sister Carmen, for giving me this lovely AeroGarden!!!

Thats right!!! Soon I'll have fresh basil, oregano and thyme, ready for the picking!!! Can't wait to see these babies bud!

MMSB Blocks for January

Well it feels good to be at it again! Things get so hectic over the holidays that it becomes impossible to get in any creative time. So with the new year, comes new enthusiasm!!!

Here are the completed blocks for Sarah for Mish Mash Stash Bash.

She requested word blocks (based on this tutorial here), and double hourglass blocks for her future picnic blanket. So after working a night shift and a short nap, I figured I'd give it a try.

My first attempt at letters:

Not too bad, but also not wonky enough.

Next I tried a double hour glass (following this tutorial). It turned out very pretty; however, 1/4" too small!!! At this point I was thinking I should wait to quilt till I have more than 3 hours sleep.

So my second attempt:

Much better!!!!

And this double hourglass....

That's right! It's 6.5", just the way Sarah wanted it! I can't wait to see these all put together. Check out MMSB link here to see all our groups lovely blocks!

Pillow Talk Swap

Well it's been months since I last posted here. I guess maybe that's because I haven't really done much creating. Sometimes I go through stints where I don't even think to enter my sewing room. But now I'm out of the rut, and back to stitching. Good thing because I've already passed the deadline for the Pillow Talk Swap but here's the final result:

I was playing around with colour value and ended up with this arrangement. No fabric is used twice, so I got to snip into alot of my stash options. This broken bento box is similar to John's tutorial over at Quilt Dad, but I didn't "wonk it up". The back is envelope style with natural linen - a nice calming contrast to these big bold prints.

And in return I received this!!!!!

A beautiful string block pillow cover...with pillow form included!!!! Thanks to Kristen over at ThreeDancingMagPies, I received this gorgeous throw pillow to nicely complement my living room. She even included some lovely cuts of Summer in the City out of print fabrics!!!! I've been hoarding that collection for a while now, gathering enough to make a quilt...so definitely next on the project list.

This swap was alot of fun. And it was only round one. Perhaps another??? And this time I WILL BE ON TIME!

Luggage Tags

I whipped up a few luggage tags to coordinate with our new luggage purchases. And I must say, they are lovely! I used Good Folks, for it's bright, bold, eye-catching patterns. Won't miss these babies on the carosel. It was very tricky working with vinyl though. I think I'll invest in a teflon foot - has anyone used one of those before? Apparently nothing will stick to them...so smooth sailing on vinyl. Next time...

Strippy complete!

I'll telling ya - if you need some motivation to get those unfinished projects done - buy a new sewing machine! You'll be shocked at all you can accomplish!

My strippy quilt (which I had completed the top months ago!), is finally complete! And I'm so in love!

I did zig zag quilting in the center, then a few straight lines along the borders. Simple, yet so very pretty. Thanks to Heidi for her suggesting this quilting design.

I did a simple backing with a scrappy border.

I love it soooo much, that it is pushed it's way into my living room. So sorry to be packing away my Amy Butler brick quilt, but have to make room for this little gem. My husband is happy too...this quilt doesn't have any pink in it.

So now I just have to create a label for it. I think I'll embroider another one like Hopscotch.

Oh ya...and I named this one "Tootsie Roll" for two reasons.
1. It was the first jelly roll I worked with, and,
2. I kept wanting to break out in dance to that ol' school song "Tootsie Roll", which kept playing in my head as I was making this quilt.

On a similar note, have any of you used Retayne or Synthrapol??? I'm worried a little about washing this one, and the Hopscotch quilt, because of the bright colours & the white sashing. I bought some Retayne, but I'm too nervous to use it. Some sites say it's okay to use it on a completed quilt, while others say no. Any experience with either of these??? It's nerve wrecking because I truly love both of these quilts!

All quilted and bound and ready to be delivered to a very special friend.

I free-motioned my way around this one, trying out my new Janome...and boy was I impressed. That quilt glided through that machine!

I choose a dark, vibrant backing. My friend, Adrienne, LOVES pink...so I thought the flowers quite fitting.

And my first attempt at embroidery! Not too shabby! I kept it simple, but really enjoyed creating this label. I usually have a hard time with labels as I haven't found my preferred method...but maybe now I have??? Time consuming, but worth it in the end. How do you do your quilt labels??? If you have any reference/link for a how-to for different methods, I would love it!!! Comment & post it here!

More Quilt Blocks

Since I had so much left over from Carm's fabric, I was able to create another block for her...a framed wonky log cabin.

And I was also able to complete Sara's block for Mish Mash Stash Bash Quilting Bee. She requested hexagons, something completely new to me, and provided a beautiful vintage floral piece of fabric. Instead of doing the paper-piecing method, I decided to take the easier route with half-hexagon construction. I've never tried paper piecing, but from what I hear, this is much faster. You can check out a template/tutorial on flickr here.

I tried to keep with the retro feel by using all 1930's inspired prints...mostly from Aunt Grace's various collections. I hope she likes it!

What happens when you get a new sewing machine???

This is what happens!!!!!!

I finally started and completed quilting my strippy quilt (has been sitting in the closet for months!).

Also, I created a new ironing board cover. I was trying to be brillant one night and got adhesive all over my old cover, so a new, hand made one was warranted. I followed this tutorial here - very easy and fast!

AND...I finished my sister's (Carmen) block for Live Piecefully Quilting Bee. She mentioned to me that she was loving the "strippy" style...so this is the result.

All that and more in 2 days!!!! This new machine is a work horse, and has rekindled my love for sewing! Thank-you Janome!

Thruming Along

So after nearly 2 years in the making, I have finally completed my thrum mittens! Aren't they beautiful? Thrum mittens are a unique way to knit-in pieces of roving to create bulk and warm on the inside of the mitt. Cool eh?

A lovely wool maker, Fleece Artist, in Nova Scotia, Ontario, creates these beautiful kits, with a large variety of colours. I picked mine up at a local yarn shop, but click here for links to a store near you.

I love them so much, I have another set in the works.

Wow!! It's been almost a month since my last post! I guess that's what happens when you get busy with life.

Sometimes, don't you wish you could just slow down time - I can't believe it's almost the end of summer.

What have I been up to? Well a whole lot of nothing really...well nothing crafty anyways. I haven't entered my sewing room in like 3 weeks! I have over 1000 posts to read in the google reader! I have a mini-quilt swap I need to get started on! I guess this is what happens when you get carried away with other demands in life.

Well anyhoo, I hope to be sewing and creating more very soon!

Amish Quilt Blocks

Boy am I ever so eager! I just received Krista's fabric for August (for Live Piecefully Quilt Bee) yesterday. And today, I've already whipped up two blocks!

Krista sent out two solids and was requesting an amish type quilt with a twist...

...so I took it literally (he he).

First of the two: a spiral block. I like it, but I wasn't really paying attention when I trimmed it up...it's only 12" square (instead of the requested 12.5"). So instead of ripping this apart, cutting, and attempting to correct it, and in the process make a huge mess, I decided to make another...

Krista was great and sent plenty of fabric. Easy to make another full block...and yes, this one is 12.5". I'm happy with it. I really hope she likes it.

Other random tidbits:

Do you ever have those days when you want to purposely destroy your sewing machine? Just so you can satisify the rage inside...and in the meantime have an excuse to buy a competely brand new one? Well that's me today. I hate my machine....you heard me...I HATE YOU! Just you wait...Soon enough I'll trade you in for a sleek, fancier model and your days of torment will be over!

Ok...I feel better now...

Family Camping Weekend

It was a great weekend, despite mother nature's fury of rain. It all started on the drive up...

Then more when we arrived. Dark clouds looming over us while we're paddling.

An intermission perhaps??? No...a thunderstorm and 3 scared children (it didn't phase the youngest Sam...he was cool as a cucumber). Once the thunder struck they all recited "I want to go home!" Instead, we all huddled around their mother (my sister). Thanks Carm, for keeping us all in check.

But alas, the dark clouds rolled away, and the sunshine (with lots of large fluffy clouds) came through. It was lots of fun and I was upset to leave. Until next time (which I think may only be another 2 weeks away), we'll stow away the canoe, and dream of sunny days with crystal calm lakes.

Well thank-you to all who helped me decide on sashing for this quilt...as you can see I went with the neutral off-white linen.

I love the way quilts look when their blowing in the wind.

(Please excuse the poor pictures...I had to use my old ancient camera as my new one is MIA)

Things I love:

- It's sashed with linen!!! I love linen!!! I used a home-dec weight though so I think quilting may get a little tricky.

- Wonderland collection! It's so fresh and youthful. I used a layer-cake for this one, and just created some basic blocks and threw them together.

- It's competely square, about the size of a small throw, which is nice enough to cuddle with on cool nights.

I finally layered this baby that has been sitting in my closet for months now...
So I accomplished the first step of getting it out and basting...but now what about quilting? I have meandered, stippled, free-motioned my way around a quilt before, but never one this large, and that makes me a little nervous. So I'm throwing it out those creative peeps out in cyber world: How should I quilt it? Any suggestions??

I'm finding myself in a little bit of a pickle...so many projects to do with so little time. I guess this is what to expect when summer gets into high gear. A few things to tick off my list:

- Shorty's block for July for Live Piecefully Quilting Bee. She pre-cut the pieces and requested a certain design so it was real easy to whip this together.

- My 5" squares for swapping. I was able to scrounge up scraps of Blossom by Urban Chiks - there are 2 cuts of each print. I'll be sending these away very soon...I wonder what I'll get in return?

Lastly, some fun stuff I received!!!

SWAPS!!! (I've become addicted...truly!)

Aren't they just so pretty?! The lovely Linnea gave me some Valori Wells Sole for the Spring into Summer Fat Quarter Swap - and she even included a little scrap of Flea Market Fancy. How nice!

Of importance...I have to start my projects for Craft Hope. I don't know if I'll have time to make a baby quilt, but I sure do need to whip up some booties at least.

On a side note: just finished my first canoe trip of the season and boy did it feel good. I didn't get too many photos, but just wanted to show off our lovely green goddess of a canoe. I'll post more photos soon...as for now, I begin my Canada Day celebrations!

Here are some pics of a purse I completed awhile back...another linen, patchwork infusion!

I decided to keep this one, finally finished the straps, and am currently using it. I used rivets for the first time - lots of fun, but a little scary & tricky. I guess the idea of cutting a hole in a newly completed bag is a little nerve-wracking - it's just like those damn grommets!

And here's something a little special: a while back I received an email from Elizabeth in the Netherlands. She was requesting scrap fabric pieces to make an international quilt for her soon to be niece/nephew. Quilters from all over the world sent her pieces. In return I received this lovely little package - some pretty prints, and a lovely bookmark. I can't wait to see how her quilt turns out - isn't that such a lovely idea???

Other random tidbits:

-MishMash StashBash is in full swing!!! It's my first time organizing anything like this, and so far I'm loving it.

-I've been swapping like crazy over at Designer fabric swappy-poo

-We're going on our first portage trip of the summer in Algonquin Park...time to get my paddling arm ready.

I seen quite a few crafters participate in Craft Hope, and felt it was my turn to jump in.

"Craft Hope is a faith-based, love inspired project designed to share handmade crafts with those less fortunate. It is our hope to combine our love for crafting and desire to help others into a project to make a difference around the world."

During their last project they received 405 dollies!!!!!! That's a whole lot of crafty love!!!!

Project 3 is just beginning. This time around they are requesting blankets, booties, and beanies for newborns. They have teamed up with The Miracle Foundation, to get these handmade goodies to to Bhawani, Rourkela and Sooch Village childrens homes in August.

They are also requesting sewers, knitters, and crocheters alike, to sumbit any pattern that you can release, for them to use on their website.

Horray!!! I got my package for the Sew into Summer Fat Quarter Swap. These pretty pieces are from Ronit at Two Hippos. Aren't they pretty? She thoughtfully sent a FQ of the flower print along with a fat eigth of the egyptian print...how generous!

More lovely pieces recieved include my fat quarter bundle of Arcadia. I'm loving this colour palette.

And I scored some Olive Rose by Valorie Wells too! This bright blues are brillant!

So I'm loving my Live Piecefully quilting bee, and was on the prowl for another to join. My sister, Carm, found this stash busting quilting bee - loved this concept, but unfortunately we were too late to join.

Soooo....why not start one ourselves???

A similar concept really...all about stash busting, sharing our talents, and pushing the limits of our creativity.

Spending time at the Post Office

Well I've chosen my 4 FQ for the Sew into Summer Fat Quarter Swap - I didn't want to post pics of them to ruin the surprise.
I wrapped each up, placed them in identical envelopes, and sealed them. Then I mixed them up and wrote each recipients name of it. So I have no idea who's getting what FQ. Kinda makes it a little surprise for them and me too! So they're off in the mail today.

I was the lucky recipient of an original shibori dyed silk scarf from Becka! It is so pretty, soft and silky! Becka does alot of fiber arts (being a teacher of it), which I know nothing about...but boy does her blog and this scarf make me want to start throwing the dye around. Quilt-a-long progress...

So I changed by mind - instead of using my previously posted fabrics for Dana's quilt-a-long, I decided to use some Portobello Market. I purchased this collection to make a quilt for my Dad & Stepmom - this is totally the colour scheme of their rec room - very traditional. So with people talking about planning Christmas presents already, I figured I better get a jump start and get sewing...

I was able to get 39 12.5" squares. We're in Week 4 of the quilt-a-long and are piecing together the quilt top. But when I put mine together like so (see below), I find it's too busy. I'm not crazy about this fabric to begin with, because it's too traditional for me, so this placing is not winning me over.

I think I'll have to insert some sashing, maybe cut up some more blocks...i dunno. I'll figure something out.

Live Piecefully Quilt Bee - June - Kat's Block

So with the start of June came my first ever experience with the Live Piecefully virtual quilting bee. June is Kat's month, and she sent out these beautiful Tree Top Fancy prints. I have done improv quilting before, but not quite like this. I was terrified to cut into it thinking "this isn't my fabric". But I did it and here's the result. I quite like it...I made a boo-boo so that's where the thinner border came in. I hope she likes it! Help please...

So I'm trying my best to get some unfinished projects done and off my list. I finally completed all the blocks for this Wonderland quilt and squared them up...now I just need to figure out some sashing. But I'm torn. I have two options...

Light or dark? Both are linen/cotton blends that I've never used before in a quilt, but thought it would be good to put them to use. The dark is a flecky grey, and the light is like a natural white (not stark white). I like them both and I can't decide.
Any thoughts? opinions? advice?

On another note, I planted my first garden ever this past weekend.

This being my first house, and also my first real yard, I decided to create a whole new flower bed. I choose perennials (because I don't really want to be doing this every year), and I was told they are pretty low maintenance...perfect for the gardening novice. So I guess I'll just have to wait and see how they spread, grow and bloom. I'm pretty happy with the outcome...

Other random tidbits:

- I got an email from Elizabeth at Ambiance in the Netherlands, and she's creating something really neat...a quilt for her soon-to-be niece/nephew with fabric from all over the world. I sent her some pieces today...if you want to help her out, check out her blog (it's in dutch I think...lol) and email her. She's got fabric bits from around the globe...what a unique and special gift.

- I also signed up for Swaptree. It's a site where you can swap games, music, movies and books with others. I listed a few of my crafty/cooking books that I no longer use. I've been scanning the site all day finding books I'd love. What a great way to share your gently loved items and receive some new stuff in return!

- I found out about Amy Butler Midwest Modern Contest (pdf file). Starts in June and runs through till September. Make anything using Amy's Midwest Modern collection and enter to win great prizes! I guess I better restock on some more fabric.

So a few months ago, I was contacted by Sarah from The Electric Quilt Company. They were looking for finished projects that were used with Amy Butler's fabric and patterns, for a new Amy Butler Software CD-ROM. So I was more than willing to share my pics and story. And today...it arrived in the mail!!! I immediately opened and popped it into my computer...and viola...my stuff is there!!!! (I can't seem to figure out how to post it here...). And there's lots of others too...all very pretty, pretty stuff. And the projects are really nice, and well planned out (like everyother Amy Butler pattern). And so you can adapt each pattern to your own taste...like change the colours or fabrics to see what it will look like. So I have been periodically getting emails from Amy Butler (and I don't know why...I must have enrolled in a newsletter or something...not that I'm complaing by anymeans, I love her stuff!) introducing new products and ideas...and here's the latest I got:

Have I already mentioned that green is my favourite colour????

So I'm at the point in many of my projects where I get frustrated.....so to distract me I pulled open my Nest jelly roll and just started sewing. Log cabin style, nothing too fancy...but I just love this green!

So I have no real idea what kind of direction I'm going in. I'll let the fabric inspire me.

But that can be disastrous at times. For example, I decided to do something similar to my Wonderland layer cake...no real plan, no pattern, just sewing...and now piles of squares sit in the corner of my sewing room. No inspiration here...I think I need some creative juices...anyone have some they want to share???

Old Red Barn Quilt-A-Long Fabrics

So I rummaged through my stash looking for fabrics for Dana's quilt-a-long and surprise...i found blue and green (I guess they have become my go-to-colours). Lots of Amy Butler, some Erin McMorris, and a dab of Alexander Henry and 3 Sisters. I really am trying my hardest not to purchase new fabric, but this quilt-a-long really has me tempted....

Home updates

I guess I should have taken a picture of this old dresser before I started painting...but I got too eager. We received this from a friend who needed to rid himself of some old stuff as he was downsizing. We scored this old dresser, plus a sofa bed, an old Singer sewing machine, a vanity, a dry sink...and I think thats it. I was loving it, since I'm such a thifter, looking for new life in others throw aways.

Here it is in the process. It was originally a dark walnut stain.

And the completed piece in my bedroom. It turned out great. I had to do 3 coats of paint to really get good coverage. The original pulls are still on, but I'm going to keep my eyes open for something a little different. So that's one piece done...I think 4 more to go.

Just threw this one in there...My sister gave this frame as a gift to me and my husband...and I finally put a photo in and found the perfect spot...atop my new dresser.

And my first attempt at seedlings. Growing these from seeds in my sunroom...some are coming in like crazy, while others are taking their time. I think it's time to re-planter them...yes? I'm such a dumb dumb when it comes to gardening...

Baby Blooms Quilt

So the quilt top is complete!!! I had a lot of fun piecing this one. It made me fall in love with 1930 reproduction prints. TOO CUTE!

So I'm in the process of quilting it...mostly stitch in the ditch, and maybe some echo around the flowers. I opted not to make faces or smilies on the flowers...I kinda like it better this way.

Some completed projects

So I've realized I'm one of those bloggers that don't post anything for like a week and a half and then all of sudden I have so much to share...

Something I have been wanting to create for a long time, and I finally found a great tutorial for it (the link is a .pdf file). It's a thread catcher attached to a weighted pin cushion and a hanging pocket organizer. How cool eh. Handing to have it all beside me while I'm sewing. I used Erin McMorris' Park Slope for all the fabric and I love the fun bright feel to it. After making this I've decided I should take some time and effort into creating a pretty space for myself. Next up...ironing board cover (mines looking pretty shady right now).

Another completed project (FINALLY!) is my Bananafana bag. I started this 1 year ago...it was supposed to be my spring bag last year...so I'll finally get to use it this year. Loving the Amy Butler Nigella fabric.

And the grommet detail is fun, however, they are scary to work with sometimes. It's a little unnerving to cut a hole in a piece that you just completed...but it all worked out.

So June if fast approaching and I'm still sorting through trying to figure out what my big giveaway will be for the SEWN website launch...I'm definitely thinking handmade...

Nature's Drying Machine

So I just love spring...especially when the days are warm enough to hang your laundry outside. I love seeing sheets and towels flapping in the wind...

Last year I accidently left my clothes pin bag outside in the rain, and unforunately it never recovered (it was a store bought one, and I couldn't get rid of the smell). So I was in a need of a replacement...and here it is:

I used up some stash fabric in a heavier weight cotton for durability.

Here's the back. I know it's hanging crooked but I think thats my fault in how I constructed it. Oh well, it's unique. I had to add a tie on the top because silly me cut the opening for the hanger too wide and I needed to cover it up. So get out the glue gun...

Here it is flapping in the wind. It's very handy, and I am pleased with how it turned out.

Now I didn't use a pattern for this, just sewing-on-the-fly. Because I used some hot glue in this project, I will be unable to remove the bag from the hanger for washing, which I now realize, can be a bit a problem considering my last experience with a clothes pin bag. Perhaps I should have followed one of the great tutorials for a bag found here, here or here. Okay, lesson learned: THINK FIRST, then sew.

No Name Tote

I haven't made alot of bags recently, but I did get excited working with this linen I purchased at the local fabric store (on sale too!). I just love the natural roughness to it (if that makes sense).

Just a simple tote with a pieced stripe going across the bottom to each side.

The straps are thread through grommets that I thought added a little different detail.

I love the lining. I think every purse or bag should be lined with fun, lively fabrics. It's like it's a hidden secret for you alone to enjoy, that others can only glimpse at.

No pattern was used...just sewing-on-the-fly. I like it...but enough to make more? I dunno...we'll have to see. I haven't figured out a name for this bag yet...I guess I'm waiting for divine inspiration.

Improv Baby Quilt COMPLETE!

It's done! All quilted, bound, washed, and ready to go! This quilt had many firsts for me...first improv block, first log cabin and first time with free motion quilting.

Just had to get a picture of it blowing in the wind.

So I guess this was my one and only completed project for the spring to finish challenge. I think I started a whole lot more than I completed. Oh well, all in good time right?

New attempts...

So here's the quilt kit that I purchased from the Creative Festival in Toronto. The pattern is from Fons and Porter's Baby Quilts...found here. So as soon as I got home, a began pressing, cutting, and organizing. There are 9 blocks in total, 5 pinwheels, and 4 flowers.

I love these prints! I wasn't sure at first, but I think they are so playful and fun!

A first for me is machine applique. It took awhile and I was very hesitant at first, but I think they turned out pretty good.

I think this one may be my favorite.

And all my pinwheels. First time doing that too! So next...sashing and piecing together!

This past weekend, me and my crafty sister went to the CreativeFestival in Toronto. Our first time going, and were we overwhelmed! We definitely found some great deals...including all of this:

And on the other spectrum...a Nest jelly roll. I've been eyeing this collection for a while but have had to control my fabric purchasing impulses...but got a great deal on it, so it's allowed.

I picked up this quilt kit on clearance! And as you can see, I have already started it! I couldn't wait to let the rotary cutter fly! More posts on this...

So we have definitely made plans to return to the October show...and I'm saving up money for a new sewing machine. I think it's time for an upgrade! Now which to choose...

Antique Finds

I'm a big lover of old furniture and antiques; however, refinished items can be very pricing. How fortunate are we to have received two large pieces for FREE! My husband's co-worker is moving and wanted to get rid of some old pieces he has no use for. So when I saw this old Singer sewing machine, I needed to have it. It was his grandmothers...I'm not sure how old it is but it does have a date of 1911 on it. So then or after I assume.

I LOVE the old pressor foot (is that what its called?). It still moved back and forth, but I have not connected it to the machine to see if it's functioning.

As you can see it's pretty beat up, but I still love it. I have another old singer sewing cabinet, but not as old as this one.

In another vanity piece we received, the drawers were filled with all this old craft stuff. This old Singer buttonholer, complete with case and instructions! Again, no clue how old...I'm thinking 70's????

I'm not quite sure what I want to do with this piece...I was thinking of removing the machine, filling the hole and using it as a console type table...is that bad of me to want to alter it? I would keep the sewing machine and display it in my sewing room...polish it up and make it pretty. We'll see...

I'm the Winner!

This is my first ever blog contest winning!!! Thanks to Kandra over at Sibling Craftery I received this lovely basket full of goodies! (And may I add, the winning annoucement was on my Birthday! How cool is that!)

Fabric, embroidery floss, a hoop, needles, a pin cushion, a tea towel, and of course the basket.

1/2 yard cuts of each of these...aren't they pretty. I love all of them, but my fav is the butterflies with the cream background.

And all my embroidery supplies. Now I have never really embroidered before, so this set is great to get me started. I'm sure this will turn out to be another crafting obsession. Go check out Sibling Craftery's blog for great tutorials and free patterns...I personally like the birds of a feather embroidery patterns...perhaps my first attempt at this fine art?

When I was trying to explain to my husband about my winnings, he was all confused..."so these ladies that you don't know just sent you a package for nothing?" was his response. It got me thinking how the Internet has provided the crafting community with an avenue to connect, and how generous everyone is. There are thousands of crafting blogs out there, hundreds of which I follow, in an effort to connect with those that share your passion about crafts. People host giveaways and take supplies from their favourite stash to hand over to someone for free to share their passion. From here in my sun-room where I type away, I feel connected with those thousands of km's away...and I think that's something special. There. My little sentimental moment.

Getting back on track

Remember these? I had completed these small improv squares months ago...and I have finally put them together. And another new experience...free motion quilting!!! Never done this before! I think I did a decent job considering I'm using a cheap little Brother machine. It was a little difficult to get the rhythm of the machine...it really makes me wonder what it would be like to sew on one of those fancy quilting machines....oh dreams!

It will be about a crib size once complete...not sure what I'm going to do with it...but it has definitely been a "quilting-on-the-fly" project...and I've loved every minute of it.

Oh wait, more new experiences! I have never labeled a quilt before, so why not start now. This label is a duplicate of my business card, blown up, and printed on fabric paper. The problem...I forgot to put it on before quilting...so I will have to figure out an alternative.

On a side note: I got a new computer!!! The old university laptop was good to me, but now it's time to move on...

New Bag in the Works

I've been working on this new design - It's a simple hobo with quilted patchwork stripe on either side, appliqued onto linen (this is my first time working with linen, and I'm loving it).

I love the way it hangs!

Using some scrap pieces, I completed two different patchwork stripes on either side of the bag.

Lined with Amy Butler's Midwest Modern line, and a square interior pocket.

So now I need a name for this purse. In the past I have used my nieces names for my other purses/clutches. I'm thinking the "Sammy" (after my nephew...but Sammy can be a girl's name too) - to me it echoes spring and summer, fun and easy. This one will be a gift for my sister for her birthday.

I will definitely be making more of these, and be sure to check out my shop for new designs!

Memory Stitches

So I was able to get some crafting in before the wedding, and thankfully so, because this was very special to me and both my sisters. I found my belated mother's wedding dress in my Dad's basement. It's a beautiful, simple, old 70's style dress, which over time had developed stains and discolouration. I knew that it would never be worn again, besides maybe at a halloween party, so I thought to get creative...

I decided to turn her gown into something special for me and my two sisters. And so came wedding clutches...

One for each of us. I used my Fiona clutch design, adding piping and a flower. Mine's the blue on (for something old and something blue). Each has a coordinating lining with fleece to add softness.

I used the skirt of the dress for the body of the purse, and her train (with coordinating ribbon) for the flower. Each has satin ribbon piping with a string of pearl beads hand stitched in place.

On the interior I added a simple label - "Stitched in Loving Memory of Karen Case". I gave them to my sisters and they just loved it. Hopefully this will be a family heirloom that will be passed on for generations.

Annoucement

I haven't posted in a long time...been very busy with planning and organizing our WEDDING!!! Me and my man of 9 years finally tied the knot! It was a nice simple ceremony in a small resort in northern ontario. It was perfect, and we are both thrilled to finally have taken this step!

So now the next step is announcement cards. We only told a few family members of the wedding, hence why I never posted our plans for it. So we plan on sending out announcement cards like you would invitations to all our family and friends. I was thinking about photo cards from Kodak or a similar service...or making our own. Does anyone have any suggestions, advice or ideas???

I'm excited to get back to normal life again...and my sewing room...

Pillows Galore!

Well I've kinda developed a love for pillow covers! I just spent the last two days playing with fabrics and designs, and came up with these three:

I love the colours! The solid is a real nice smokey green - and the flower print fabric is bold and beautiful!
After completing those log cabins for Project Improv, I have just fell in love with piecing these fronts! It's simple, yet gives you endless opportunities for creativity and imagination.

I really like them all, but I think I LOVE the stripe one below:

So it's been along time in the works, but I have finally decided to start up my Etsy shop again. I was doing really well there for about a year, then I moved to a new house, things got lost, sewing machines got broken, yadda yadda yadda...but now I'm back on track.

Fabric Cork board

So I have been wanting to make this for a VERY long time, but supply issues (staples for the staple gun, enough ribbon, etc.) always stopped me from completing it...so yesterday I said "Just do it...and if it doesn't turn out, oh well." I had a large piece of this fabric laying around for a long time, and I have finally put it to good use. I didn't over embellish with ribbons because I thought eventually it will be covered with papers and lists, etc.

I used the Moda ribbon you get with jelly rolls to add a little detail to each corner. I think it looks quite cute.

Then I started loading it up with some stuff...the downfall to this design is the solitary hanging hook at the top...if I put too much on one side it leans. So for now, I'm restricted to light papers and pins until I fix...

As a side note, I found these buttons that I purchased ages ago buried in my drawer. Isn't it cute! If I have it out on the cork board than maybe I will remember to find a good use/home for them...

Wonky Log Cabins

So after my first success with making a log cabin, I thought I would try to make some wonky blocks. It started with this one:

Until I ended up with 5!

These are all 6" square. I used up my scraps of Urban Chiks Blossom. Not quite sure what I'm going to do with these yet...I think I'll keep making more until I run out of scraps. I think I see a throw quilt in the works.

I must thank Jacquie for her inspirational blog that has opened my a whole new world of quilting for me. I love the creativity and individuality of each block, and the freedom I have to choose the design - no patterns or designers to dictate my creative process! It's exhilarating!

Improvisional Log Cabin Block

So I heard about Project Improv from Tallgrass Prairie Studio, but I couldn't decide whether or not to join. First, I have never made a log cabin block, let alone a improvisional one. So I read through a few tutorials, and starting scouring my scrap bins. And viola! My first improvisional piece. And was it FUN! It felt liberating to just randomly choose patterns and sizes and let it all come together.

There are bits of Amy Butler, Urban Chiks, Anna Griffin and various pieces. I think it came together quite nicely. So the piece measures approx 14" x 14" - too big for the Project Improv - so I think this will become a pillow cushion cover...that can't be too hard, right?

I HIGHLY recommend taking this step and just flow with your mood, the fabric, and what inspires you. So with this great experience in hand, I decided to join Project Improv! I will definately be making more of these! Check out Project Improv's Flickr group. Some beautiful and amazing pieces.

Next attempt: try making it Wonky!

My So-Called Winter Bag

Every season I plan to make a purse or bag for the upcoming season. I had started this purse project several months ago in hopes that it would become my winter bag this year...sadly I'm not quite their yet and winter is halfway over. I seem to get too distracted with fabric.

I got this awesome free pattern from the Berroco website. I have a huge stash of yarn, but was saving this very special skein for something beautiful. I got this gorgeous hand dyed yarn from dkKnits, which worked perfectly. Below is the front of the purse currently on my blocking board.

I know it's hard to see...the lighting is off a little bit...

I have completed both front and back, now just have to complete the strap and lining. Should be ready by...oh lets say....June.

Work In Progress

My first quilt for 2009. I had Moda's Cotton Blossom jelly roll laying around, and I decide it was time to pick it up and get cutting. I saw this beautiful quilt on Beaty Family Fun's Flickr page and was inspired! I decided to throw caution to the wind and create a quilt with no pattern. It looked easy enough, yet with my little background in quilting I was still a little nervous.

My beautiful strips sewn and ready to cut. (It was so beautiful out that day as you can see the sunshine coming through the window).

Strips together with white sashing. I wasn't sure whether to use white or cream...I think I made the right choice.

The center is complete!! I just randomly choice which strip sets to cut and connect.

Aren't those colours beautiful! Now all I have to complete is the checked border, back, bind and quilt! I planned to hopefully complete the quilt top today but Old Man Winter is raging on us and my laundry drain is frozen...so while my husband deals with a flooded laundry room, I'm going to go lock myself in my sewing room.

Completed Quilts of 2008

I only began quilting in early 2008...my first was the brick pattern using Amy Butler's Lotus collection. I had always thought of quilting as an "old lady" past time...but seeing the new the inspiring fabrics and designs I knew I had to try it! And I definitely feel in love!

This quilt took quite a while considering I was learning in the process. It was a good first project as it was forgiving to errors. It is definitely a favorite of mine and stays in my living room.

This quilt is at the top of my list! I made it for my sister and her family as a Christmas gift. I used Urban Chiks Blossom collection and a pattern called Uptown from the Moda website. It was another great pattern that was very forgiving to mistakes!

Now I have SOO many projects on the go! I'm becoming overwhelmed with fabric!

The Fiona

My first creation!!! The Fiona is named after my niece for her sweet sophisticated style (you know....the charm all 16 month babies have?).

I used a heavy 100% cotton canvas print with a black satin lining and black braided piping for a POP! Easy open-close with a magnetic clasp.

I used a super heavy interfacing called "Flexi-firm" for all sides and flap for stability and structure.

I was fortunate to have a night out with this clutch and it held up! I was able to have my wallet, camera, keys, & cellphone (and even those nasty packs of you-know-what). It maintained it's shape - no flippy floppy here! The extra heavy interfacing along with the satin lining provided cushion and softness for my delicate camera. I will definitely be making more of these!
